How to Change the Wax Trap on a Phonak BTE Hearing Aid

Hearing aids are exposed to earwax, moisture, and debris daily, which can block the receiver and affect performance. Wax traps (or wax guards) are small filters that protect your device from wax buildup. Regularly changing them ensures optimal sound quality and device longevity.

For Phonak BTE hearing aids with receivers-in-canal (RIC) and custom earpieces, the most commonly used wax guard is the CeruShield Disk system.

When to Change the Wax Trap

  • You notice reduced sound or muffled audio

  • You can see wax buildup on the guard

  • It’s been about 4–6 weeks since the last change (depending on usage and wax production)

🛠️ Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Remove the Hearing Aid from Your Ear
Hold the device securely and identify the wax guard opening (usually the part that faces inward toward your ear canal).

  2. Take a Black Wax Stick
    Each stick has two ends:

    • One empty end (removal tool)

    • One end with a new white wax guard

  1. Use the Empty End to Remove the Old Wax Guard

    • Insert the empty end straight into the current wax guard.

    • Press in gently and pull straight out—the old wax trap should come out with the stick.

  1. Flip the Stick Around

    • Now use the end that has the new wax guard.

    • Insert it into the now-empty opening of the hearing aid.

  1. Insert and Pull Out

    • Gently push the new wax guard in until it clicks or feels secure.

    • Pull the stick straight out—the new wax guard should stay in place.

  1. Dispose of the Used Stick

    • Each stick is single-use—discard it after the change.

🧼 Extra Tips

  • Always handle your hearing aids over a soft surface to avoid damage if dropped.

  • Don’t attempt to clean the wax trap—just replace it when it’s full.

  • Store the CeruShield in a cool, dry place and close it after use to keep it clean.
